Why I Love Date-ing

My roommates and I recently started watching Sex and The City on HBO GO. After figuring out my HBO account’s password, we agreed to postpone our summer homework assignments and splurge with some comedy.

* Spoiler alert: unlike Carrie Bradshaw’s column, this post doesn’t include gossip about the dates your thinking of… or sex… *

While I binge watched the first season with my roommates, I avoided binge eating chocolate chips. It’s my kryptonite. Even when I dodge my pantry, I somehow end up with a couple handfuls of that damn chocolate. Anyone else have this problem??

I’ve a new way to treat myself that doesn’t involve inhaling chocolate like its oxygen…. annnnd it still isn’t what you may be thinking. It’s with dates! I can say with Samantha’s confidence that dates are delish.
Dates are the perfect sweet treat if you want to have some bang for your sugar buck. AKA, ditch the chocolate and eat something with the good stuff like: potassium, fiber, antioxidants, etc. This will hit the spot, I promise 😉

Heres why dates are my guilt-free treat:

  • Fiber – Unlike that chocolate, dates have a generous amount fiber. Fiber is great for slowing down digestion and therefore, moderating blood sugar levels when consuming sugar-ey foods. Just 1/4 cup provides 3 grams of fiber, that is 14% of the USDA’s recommended daily allowance of fiber!
  • Potassium – Watch out bananas, dates are the new “it” potassium fruit! Potassium is necessary for energy metabolism and is necessary for proper muscle contraction, as it plays a direct role in the production of a muscle contraction. A diet lacking potassium could lead to: osteoporosis, high blood pressure, stroke, or kidney stones.
  • Bones – Dates contain selenium, manganese, and magnesium, all of which aid in bone health.
  • Iron – Iron is a part of hemoglobin that aids in oxygen delivery to cells. It is critical that cell’s receive oxygen for routine bodily functions.
  • Antioxidants – According to the American Dietetic Association, a diet rich with antioxidants may prevent diabetes, cancer, heart diseases, and neurological problems.

I LOVE to treat myself with crunchy almond butter sandwiched in this nectarous fruit. Along with the date’s fiber, the fat and protein from the almond butter will help balance blood sugar.
Let me know what you think!
